The last of our spotlights to celebrate National Apprenticeship Week 2024 is Keanu Wheeler-Hamm, a Commercial Gas Apprentice with Purdy’s who has almost completed his apprenticeship. He joined us 2.5 years ago, looking for a new career to support his new family.

“I knew about Purdy’s as they looked after the district heating on the estate where I was working doing woodwork and carpentry, so when I came across them at a job careers event, I was interested in finding out what opportunities they had available. I felt lucky to get offered a job and start my journey with Purdy.

“After 6 months, I was given the opportunity to work towards attaining the plumbing, heating and gas Level 3 NVQs.

Attending college

“As well as working on site, I attended Barnet and Southgate College once a week for 18 months, successfully passing all my exams and becoming a fully qualified gas engineer. This is one of my biggest achievements to date.

Learning on the job

“Reactive maintenance is a fast-paced environment where we are looking after all types of domestic and commercial systems, so it is a great place to experience all aspects of plumbing, heating and gas; something I really enjoyed.

Aspirations

“I have a Purdy van, so my first goal is to finishing learning how to drive, gain my commercial licence and then expand my qualifications.

“I would recommend this apprenticeship to anyone who is willing to work hard and further their knowledge of the gas industry. I look forward to progressing further at Purdy.”
